of the morning of Saturday, February 1, 2003, 12 of us showed up for the Space Coast Go Club meeting. I suspect, as in my case, that many just wanted to resume the appearance of normalcy and escape the perpetual viewing of the horrible explosion over the skies of Texas that morning.
Dan "The Mad Romanian" Micsa brought his neighbor, Steve Conboy to learn the game. Additionally, from our last meeting, Cat Holmes and her son, Deyne (which I misspelled last time!), returned as promised! To round out the field, we had Fred & Ginnie (of course), Greg Grant, Jeff Ehrlich, Yuyin Chen, the eminent Dr. Bart Lipofsky, and Chief Electronics Technician Glen Slawson off the SS Toledo, tendered in Port Canaveral for two days. Glen was "doing" the area, dropped in at Barnes & Noble, and spent the entire session with us.
The meeting turned out to be the premiere teaching event in our club's short history. Although some actual games were played, the bulk of the meeting involved teaching: Cat, Deyne, Steve, and Glen were all apt students and showed a remarkable understanding of the game at so early a stage. Later, Dan did an analysis of an opening game between Bart and Jeff with many variations and questions in front of an audience of interested onlookers.
Considering the traumatic morning catastrophe, I believe everyone not only enjoyed the session, but benefited from it as well.
And, not to be accused of inaccurate reporting, I must make mention of the fact that as we were breaking up after an enjoyable afternoon, Mr. Stephen Schneider showed up just in time to say goodbye.
Hope to see even more of you at our next meeting...
